What is chili chicken?
Chilli chicken is made up of crispy fried chicken with bell peppers or capsicum, Garlic, Onions, and sauces.
This recipe is widespread in the Indian streets and the most loving appetizer for our non-vegetarian friends. The crispy fried chicken tossed in the hot sauce is drool-worthy. And I am sure when you make the recipe at your home, Everyone is going to love it!
I am sharing this Chili Chicken recipe for two reasons –
First, my Family loves this chili chicken recipe.
Secondly, It’s a most common starter in Indo-Chinese restaurants or streets.
How to make the Best of this Chili Chicken Recipe?
To make the best chili chicken you have marinated boneless chicken pieces( I usually use both bone and boneless chicken pieces) in soya sauce, ginger garlic green chili paste, cornstarch, and all-purpose flour which makes it more crispy. Fry until it is crisp and golden brown. Later toss it in the hot, spicy, and tangy sauce.
It is crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. The moment you take the first bite, the flavors are going to burst into your mouth.
Serve hot with Fried Rice, Schezwan Rice, or Hakka Noodles.
What is the exact taste of chili chicken?
It’s a combination of spicy, sweet and sour! Because of the flavours of different sauces in the dish it makes it super flavourful. It depends on your cooking too! You can adjust the spiciness according to your taste. If you want spicy chili chicken, just increase the number of green chilies. If you want less spice you can reduce the chilies. You can customize this chili chicken Recipe as per your spiciness.

Process of making Chili Chicken with pictures
Preparation
First of all, start preparing the marination of chicken. Take a bowl. Put in washed chicken pieces. Add cornflour, all-purpose flour, black pepper, soy sauce, salt, Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder(optional) (In this recipe I haven’t used), and egg, and marinate everything properly. You can also add food color but it’s optional.
Keep it aside to marinate for 3o minutes to 1 hour. Marination makes the spices and flavors go into the chicken, which ultimately makes the chicken more flavourful.
Make sure all the chicken pieces are coated nicely in the mixture.
Start Frying Chicken
Now, after one hour, Prepare the oil to fry the chicken pieces.
In a pan or kadhai heat oil at a very high flame. Make sure when you put the marinated chicken pieces in the oil, you hear the sizzling sound.
Once the oil is hot, keep the flame in medium to high mode. Start frying the chicken and fry it on both sides until it’s golden brown and crisp.
Take out the chicken pieces and another step is to prepare the sauce.
Preparation of Sauce
Now To make sauce, On the same pan or kadhai you have used to fry chicken. Start adding the ingredients.
First add chopped garlic and ginger, ginger garlic green chilli paste, and slit green chillies.
Sauté it for 4-5 minutes in high flame.
Now add capsicum cubes and onion bulbs. Sauté it for 2 minutes.
At this point, add all the sauces – Soy sauce, tomato ketchup, sriracha sauce, green chili sauce, and vinegar.
Keep on tossing everything at high flame.
Add seasoning
For seasoning here I have added salt, sugar, and chicken masala(optional).
Mix! Mix! And Mix! Add all the fried chicken pieces.
Dry Chili Chicken Recipe
Here if you want dry chilli chicken, switch off the flame and sprinkle white sesame seeds.
Gravy Chili Chicken
But if you want gravy chili chicken, at this point, Take warm water in a bowl, and 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch. Mix it well. Pour this slurry into the pan. Sauté it. And let it simmer until the gravy thickens
And serve while it’s hot.
Tips to make the best Chilli chicken
- Always marinate the chicken for at least 30 minutes.
- Always use the best quality Kashmiri red chili powder or paprika.
- Avoid using food color because it results in sticking on the bottom of the Pan.
- Always use fresh green chilies to level up the spice, instead of using Red chilli powder.

- 1 vinegar
- 1 Onion
- 1 Capsicum
- 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Green Chili paste
- 1 chopped ginger garlic
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp sesame seeds

Notes
- Always marinate the chicken at least for 30 minutes.
- Always use the best quality of Kashmiri red chili powder or paprika.
