History of Dombari Buru

An incident like Jalianbala Bagh happened in present-day Jharkhand during the freedom movement. In the incident that took place 20 years before the Jalianbala Bagh incident, hundreds of tribals were surrounded and roasted by British soldiers. This place is Dombari Buru of Murhu block area of Khunti district. 122 years ago, on January 9, 1899, the British surrounded and gunned down innocent people in Dombari Buru. Birsa Munda was holding a meeting with his 12 followers at Dombari Buru.

People from dozens of nearby villages also participated in the meeting. There were women and children also among them. Birsa Munda was raising the alarm among the people against the British. The British came to know about this meeting of Birsa. The British soldiers attacked there and surrounded the Dombari mountain from all sides and the British soldiers wreaked havoc on the Munda people. Without any information, the British soldiers started firing indiscriminately. Birsa Munda along with his supporters fiercely faced the British with the help of traditional weapons. Hundreds of people were martyred in this conflict.

However, Birsa Munda managed to escape from there by dodging the British. The names of only six people are recorded in the Pathalgadi conducted at the site. These include Hathiram Munda of Gutuhatu, Hadi Munda, Sigrai Munda of Bartoli, Bankan Munda’s wife, Majhiya Munda’s wife, and Dundang Munda’s wife. Local people say that about four people were killed in that conflict. People call Dombari Buru as Jallianbala Bagh of Jharkhand. After this incident, Martyrdom Day is celebrated here every year on January 9 in memory of those killed.

Do You Know?

Late Dr. Ramdayal Munda, an international-level linguist, sociologist, tribal intellectual, and litterateur who was a member of Rajya Sabha, had constructed a pillar in Dombari Buru. This 110-foot-high pillar still tells the story of the martyrdom of hundreds of people. The huge pillar built in the years 1986-87, carrying within itself the history of Ulgulan, is still waiting for development. This place as well as the surrounding villages, roads still need to be developed.

According to the sources, To beautify Dombari Buru, Vishu Munda of the village donated 80 dems of land below Dombari Buru in 1990. Padmashree Dr. Ramdayal Munda along with administrative officer JB Tubid had assured Vishu that he would be given compensation and a job in exchange for the land. Vishu Manda says that he has given the land. A life-size statue of Dharti Aba was installed on the ground, an amphitheater was built, and an attractive stage was also constructed with the MLA fund of MLA Neelkanth Singh Munda. PCC road was also constructed up to Dombari mountain at Rs 15 lakh, but they neither got compensation nor jobs. Despite this, they are happy that something was made in the name of Mother Earth. He said that the government should develop it as a tourist destination and make it an educational place for the future generations of the state.
